MCP Servers in Agentic Reporting for Digital-Asset Financial Reporting

Abstract

The convergence of large language model (LLM) agents and blockchain-native financial data presents a practical infrastructure challenge: raw on-chain transaction data is semantically opaque to AI systems without structured intermediation. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 and subsequently adopted by OpenAI and other ecosystem participants, offers a composable architecture for connecting AI reasoning engines to typed, permissioned data sources through a uniform interface. This paper examines MCP in digital-asset financial reporting, using NODE40's MCP server implementation as a reference architecture. It evaluates MCP against conventional REST API integration using a rubric centered on capability, governance, and compliance fitness. It also draws on two external case examples, Morgan Stanley's AskResearchGPT and Deloitte's DARTbot and Omnia platform, to situate these design patterns in broader financial-services practice. A control-boundary matrix distinguishes analytical automation that MCP-connected agents can legitimately support from licensed professional responsibilities that remain outside the scope of any automated system. 1. Introduction

Digital assets create a reporting-data problem that differs from traditional finance. A single entity may hold positions across many blockchain networks, execute thousands of transactions per year, and carry cost-basis obligations that span tax years, asset types, and jurisdictions. Meanwhile, regulatory pressure is increasing. The Internal Revenue Service published final broker reporting regulations in 2024 requiring digital-asset information reporting under Form 1099-DA [12].   2. The AI layer synthesizes and explains from those structured outputs.
  3. A licensed professional performs final review and sign-off where required.

MCP is useful in step 2. It does not replace steps 1 or 3.

The documented architecture follows standard MCP patterns:

  • tool declarations with typed input/output behavior,
  • server-mediated access control,
  • request authentication using API key and HMAC signing mechanics [4][5].

5.3 Illustrative tool categories

Based on published documentation [2], the tool surface supports categories such as:

  • account and ledger retrieval,
  • transaction search and filtering,
  • reporting-oriented analytical lookups.

These categories are relevant to tax-prep and reporting workflows where practitioners need fast access to structured records.
